Diversity in the Workplace: Foreign Staff Thriving at GCI Shakuyaku Home Nursing

Priyanka from India shares her experience of working and living in Japan

At GCI Shakuyaku Home Nursing, staff from various countries and cultural backgrounds work together. This time, we spoke with Ms. Priyanka Kuwamat, originally from India, who currently works as a head office staff member.

12 Years in Japan — Now Living in Yokohama with Her Family

Priyanka came to Japan 12 years ago due to her husband’s job. Since then, she and her husband have obtained permanent residency and now live in Yokohama with their two sons.

“Before coming to Japan, I lived in Jaipur, a city about 300 kilometers from New Delhi. I graduated from Delhi University and earned an MBA. After that, I worked as a trainer at Microsoft,” she shared with a gentle smile.

How She Found GCI Shakuyaku Home Nursing

Her job search in Japan began with support from a counselor at Hello Work.

“I was told that GCI Shakuyaku Home Nursing actively hires foreign staff, which made me feel comfortable applying. The emails and personality test during the interview were written in both Japanese and English, which was really helpful.”

She now works four days a week from 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM, a schedule that allows her to balance work and parenting.

“I want to be home when my kids return from school. At the same time, I want to gain work experience in Japan. GCI Shakuyaku Home Nursing gives me the opportunity to do both.”

Her Strength: Accounts Receivable Management

Priyanka’s specialty is managing accounts receivable, including entering data into the system and reconciling payments.

“It’s rewarding because I can use my finance and accounting knowledge. My Japanese is still a work in progress, but the workplace also serves as a great place to practice. I’m really grateful.”

A Workplace That Respects Cultural Differences

Priyanka is a vegetarian and practices Hinduism. Her family doesn’t drink alcohol, and they live in a way that values their cultural and religious traditions.

“I take time off during Hindu festivals, and the workplace is very understanding. I really appreciate that.”

Interestingly, she married her husband without meeting him beforehand — their parents were friends. She says that sharing the same values around a way of living, including food and faith, helps keep the family strong and united.

Her Dream: Starting a Business in Japan

Priyanka’s dream is to start her own business in Japan about 10 years from now, once her children are independent.

“I haven’t decided what kind of business yet, but I want to do something special — something only I can do.”

Final Thoughts

What stood out most during the interview was Priyanka’s positive attitude and courage to take on new challenges. I personally lived in the U.S. for six years, but I didn’t have the courage to work there due to language barriers. That’s why I truly admire Priyanka’s strength — working in a foreign country while raising a family.

GCI Shakuyaku Home Nursing is a workplace that embraces cultural and linguistic diversity and values each individual’s strengths. Seeing someone like Priyanka thrive here gives us all hope for a more inclusive future.
